TDI SIDEMOUNT COURSE
Sidemount Diving was thought to be a Cave Divers only domain, but due to the advances in equipment technology and greater availability of training, sidemount has exploded onto the mainstream market with divers of varying experience taking advantage of the many benefits Sidemount Diving has to offer.
The advantages of sidemount diving came early with technical divers realizing that the tanks, configured down the side of the body, create a lower profile in the water than the traditional backmount configuration, thus allowing access to, and exploration into spaces without disturbing the environment. Less Silt meant greater access to the under water world.
Cave divers could push further into unexplored cave systems by squeezing thru tighter restrictions. Wreck divers could push their way thru small hatches by unclipping the bottom ender from the hip D-ring and reef divers could use sidemount to navigate thru tight coral canyons hoping to reduce unintentional coral contact.
Another massive advantage for sidemount divers is the fact they have easier access to the tank valves in case of an emergency. If a tank valve blows, they can simply look down, identify the problem, and fix it while switching to the reserve cylinder in front of them. While in backmount, the hardest part of any emergency valve shutdown is to recognize were the problem actually is. In Sidemount, not only can you identify the problem quicker, you’ll also help in not wasting any of your gas while trying to isolate the problem.
One final benefit is comfort, considering the average technical rig weighs close to 60 kilos, the ability to don the cylinders while in the water takes away the burden of the weight on your body. You’ll enter the water with your simple sidemount harness in place and clip on the cylinders allowing the weight burden to reduce through buoyancy. This particularly appeals to those with back or joint issues or even the older generation as it frees up the spine so heightens the sensation of freedom as your diving.
Who this TDI course is for:
